Bottom-up input from citizens’ engagement and joint analysis of the outcomes

Τhe workshops have been successfully conducted in the partner countries, marking the completion of this phase. We are excited to move ahead with the upcoming stages of the project!

Why engaging citizens is essential for successful mobility hubs?

Mobility hubs are emerging as transformative solutions to tackle traffic congestion, pollution, and transportation inefficiencies, particularly in Mediterranean regions. Designed to enhance connectivity and reduce reliance on private vehicles, the mobility hubs promise a shift toward more sustainable and inclusive urban and rural mobility. However, their success cannot solely rest on the expertise of stakeholders, regulators, transportation operators, and technology providers. A crucial element often missing in the planning and implementation of mobility hubs is the active involvement of CITIZENS. Engaging local communities is essential to ensure these solutions truly address the unique challenges and aspirations of the people they serve. In urban settings, this means understanding the diverse needs of dense populations, including commuters, families, and individuals with mobility challenges. In rural settings, it involves co-designing first- and last-mile solutions that are practical, accessible, and equitable.

What can we achieve by engaging citizens?

By incorporating citizen input into the decision-making process, mobility hubs can be tailored to meet real-world needs, build trust, and encourage widespread adoption. Citizen engagement not only enriches the design and functionality of mobility hubs but also fosters a sense of ownership and cooperation that is vital for their long-term success. As we look to the future of sustainable transportation, placing people at the heart of these innovations is not just beneficial – it is essential.

How do we engage citizens in GREENMO?

The active involvement and actual engagement of citizens in the processes towards co-developing the final output is an integral part of the project that is led by University of Cyprus. Citizens will be involved in GREENMO to provide their viewpoint in two complementary ways:

  • Participatory workshops will be held in each territory for identifying citizens’ real needs, sketching and co-creating use cases via design and critical thinking, while also exploring their perceptions and needs in mobility hubs. The participatory workshops conclude with impact exploration using scenario-based exercises.
  • Stated preference surveys will be distributed to the general population in each territory. Complementing the qualitative insights received by participatory workshops, these surveys could capture quantifiable, structured, quantitative data essential for modeling in gap analysis (a future task of the project). Furthermore, the surveys will help predict behavioral responses to hypothetical mobility hub scenarios and provide valuable insights into demand patterns.
