GREENMO – Promoting Green and Inclusive Mobility hubs
for greener MED living areas by leveraging citizens’ real needs

One of the most crucial challenges in modern Mediterranean urban areas is to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution towards achieving better living environments which are now burdened, given the citizens’ commuting demand, and the increasing seasonal traffic flows in MED areas. Therefore, new, greener, faster and more flexible transportation options with improved connectivity are needed, for the climate-friendly mobility shift away from private cars.

In this context, to effectively promote low-carbon solutions, mobility hubs emerged mainly in Northern/Central Europe, aiming to smoothly connect public and shared transport modes while providing high-quality users’ experience with additional services at an aesthetically upgraded area. However, they are being developed in different contexts in relation to MED people’s transportation culture and habits, which requires further study and adaptation of the concept.

  • Are MED citizens ready to adopt these new mobility habits?
  • How can they been convinced to change their traffic culture to a more green and efficient way?
  • How familiar are the local policymakers with the efficient implementation of this concept after all?

These key questions will be explored in depth to contribute to the development of the joint project strategy for green and inclusive mobility hubs for the Mediterranean regions (urban and peri-urban) taking into account the vision, pillars, real needs, habits and mobility culture of citizens.
The holistic approach of GREENMO project that integrates and compares both top-down and bottom-up perspectives, will ensure the involvement of stakeholders, the active inclusion of local communities and citizens, while not neglecting the touristic element as well, for the participatory assessment and promotion of mobility hubs towards climate change mitigation.

Six project partners from six countries will work together on this project, along with the continuous support and involvement of six Associated Partners as well.
